A sticker on John’s laptop case reads: Live a Great Story. I read it frequently, as I’m often across the table from him in meetings. The simple message serves to remind me of a big truth, and it motivates me.
In Great Marriage, we encourage couples to Live a Great Story – a Great Love Story.
Here are a few concepts or ideas to discuss or get you started:
· Keep fun as a key part of your relationship.
When was the last time you had fun together? What makes both of you laugh?
· Be friends and continue to build your friendship.
What type of friend are you in your marriage? How would you describe your friendship?
· Invest in the romance of your relationship.
How healthy is your sex life? When was the last time you did something to demonstrate the romantic love you share?
· Talk often; listen more.
Are you being intentional about communication?
· Share chores well.
Where are you succeeding? Where could you improve?
· Make date nights a priority.
Describe your best date night? Plan another one.
· Try new things together.
When was the last time you did something new together? Describe the experience?
· Be active in a healthy small group.
If you’re in one, list the benefits. If you’re not in one, pray about direction in this area?
· Worship together weekly.
Invest in a local community where you can grow in discipleship.
· Travel together when you can and how can you.
Everyone has different budgets, ideas, and resources. Start somewhere. Start small if needed or start a fund to go big eventually.
· Laugh together, cry together.
Share your emotions openly.
· Dream together.
Make a list of dreams to discuss and pursue together.
· Be a learner in life.
Play games together. Start a 2-person book club. Learn a new language. Attend a local lecture. Plant a fruit tree. Refinish a piece of furniture. Take up a sport.
In your Great Marriage, live a great story. Don’t let the humdrum, routine of life squeeze the fun, joy, and excitement out of your marriage. Create space for a great story to be written and be intentional about living it.
Blessings,
Jo
Fun Fact: Collecting interesting stickers is part of our great story. John and I are always on the hunt for a souvenir sticker that captures the memory.
What’s your go-to souvenir or shared collection? We’d love to know. Just post it in the comments.
